Year 2 have recently been on some woodland adventures as all classes have visited Ecclesall Woods to learn about shelter, fire safety and exploration. Luckily, both trip days were blessed with beautiful autumnal weather which meant that rain didn't halt our outdoor exploration. Children worked in teams to create dens large enough to keep the whole team snug and out of the elements. Our architects and builders created some fantastic structures that were definitely capable of keeping the cold and wet out. The children also learnt how to use a fire steel safely to light a fire. Although this was quite a tricky skill, the children persisted in their efforts and were rewarded when their sparks lit the kindling successfully. In school our children have already developed their geographical skills by making fantasy dragon maps. In the woods they built on these skills by learning how to use compasses and then making maps and later whole dragon worlds out of found woodland materials. We had two fantastic days out in the woods. Thank you to all our parent and carer volunteers and to the outdoor learning officers from the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust who led the sessions.
