Update Concerning Covid-19

Monday 16 Mar 2020 00:00am

As you will know from recent events, our school community, along with many others, is entering a period of prolonged uncertainty associated with the spread of the Coronavirus. As I’m sure you will appreciate, we are currently dealing with a complex and rapidly changing situation. Our first priority will always be the health, safety and wellbeing of the pupils and staff in our school. Now more than ever, this remains our primary focus. Already in school we are undertaking measures such as: Reminding children about the importance of hand washing and showing them how this is done. Explaining to pupils the importance of hygiene, with a particular focus upon ‘Catch It; Bin It; Kill It!’ and the avoidance of touching the mouth and face with bare fingers where possible. Cleaning of high risk areas, such as pupil toilets, during the school day as well as at the end of the school day in order to maintain hygiene. Listening to children who are concerned and, as required, allowing appropriate discussion and reassuring pupils about their worries. Communicating any school specific advice to parents and carers as and when this is necessary. Similarly to all schools, we are following official advice from the government, NHS and Public Health England. This advice is being communicated to the school on a daily basis and we are monitoring and responding as it is published. This official advice will underpin all the actions we take. Current advice instructs schools to remain open, but as a school we are receiving some queries from parents about this and other matters, so here are some responses to frequently asked questions. If my child has a new, continuous cough or high temperature, should they stay off school? Yes, the official guidance is that any child with newly developed symptoms such as a new, continuous cough or a raised temperature (37.8 degrees and above) should stay off school for 14 days; and that all households in which a child or other someone else has such symptoms should also all self-isolate for 14 days. How will I be informed if the school needs to close? If our school has to close we will inform you via text, email and our website. In the event of closure, what can my child do at home to support their learning? We will contact parents with information and links to suitable age appropriate ideas if this happens. Of course the usual homework activities will still be applicable such as reading, spellings and access to the school’s online learning platform ‘Education City’. As a school, we wish to send out our very best wishes to you all at this difficult time. As a centrepiece of the local community we would urge everyone to help each other as much as possible and, if this is not already occurring, set up support networks for vulnerable members. It is through supporting and helping each other that our community will best navigate the difficult few weeks to come.
