On Friday 22nd June, twelve Year 2 children went with Mr Wood and Mrs Slater to Hallam Primary School to take part in a dodgeball competition. We fielded two teams of six players, competing against children from Hallam Primary School, Nether Green Infants and Broomhill Primary. The teams were well matched and the whole afternoon had a great atmosphere of friendly competition as the children from the different schools cheered each other on, shook hands and exchanged high-fives, and chatted in the shade between games. Dodgeball is played with six players per team, with three soft foam balls that start in the middle of the playing area. Three players per team are picked to compete in the initial race to get the balls from the middle for their team. Then it’s game on and time to get throwing! Players are out if the ball strikes them below the head before it bounces. This is where your dodging skills come in: you have to keep your eye on the action and stay agile to avoid incoming balls. If you manage to catch a ball thrown by an opposing team member, they’re out and anyone from your team who is out comes back in. As the games are only three minutes long, they are very fast-paced and fun! All the children from Lydgate played extremely well: dodging effectively, executing accurate throws and even some skilful catches. Best of all, no one gave up or got annoyed when they were out or when their team lost. In the overall competition, one of Lydgate’s teams emerged victorious after a close victory in the final game of the day. Qusai was also named as one of the players of the tournament for his relentless energy and determination: he simply never gave up. We would like to say a big thank you to all the organisers of the event, thanks to Hallam Primary School for hosting it, and to all the children who participated and made it a wonderful afternoon of sport for everyone.
